Modern Warfare 2
Since we are all PC Gamers, the upcoming MW2 will affect you regardless even if you are not planning to buy the game.
Made by Infinity Ward and Activision, MW2, like its predecessor, Call of Duty 4, was on the verge of becoming the biggest game of the year. Just recently, Infinity Ward announced that Dedicated Servers will no longer be released and instead, a matchmaking system like the Xbox360 and the PS3 will be adopted.
This does not seem very important, but I assure you that it will have a great effect. One of the pluses about playing on PC is your ability to control what you do, rather then have a set gametype and almost no control over who you play with. The versatility of the PC allows you to pick servers with rules, pick servers with people whom you want to play with, pick different mods and custom maps, and most of all, interact with the community. If no dedicated servers are brought to Modern Warfare 2, all of this control PC gamers enjoy will be gone. Not only that, but if other gaming companies view MW2 as a success in the PC area, then they will wish to remove dedicated servers from their future games as well and making the PC nothing more than an Xbox360 with a mouse and keyboard. People play PC games for years because of the mods and community centered around the game while Xbox people get new games every 3-4 months because of the boring and repetitive gameplay.
Now Infinity Ward is such a big company, what could anybody do to protest? Currently, the PC community around the world is organizing a boycott of MW2. We are not asking you to completely forget about Modern Warfare 2, we are simply asking you to hold off on buying it for a while. Please sign the petition below to show Infinity Ward what PC gamers want, and keep a unique gaming experience from becoming like any other gaming platform.
If you want to know more about the Dedicated Servers issue, feel free to visit the forums below where people are showing their outrage at the problem.

The petition below numbers around 160,000. Please show your support and sign it!

That would have been my 2nd FPS game that I actually buy and not just download, but seeing this, I'll wait what will happen.

Unfortunately, they already said they will not change their decision. Also for the people who liked to compete in leagues and stuff, the modding community gave up on them. So it's basically a console version on pc now. Which some people will still buy. But I will just skip and forget about the cod franchise.
I am going back to tactical shooters when blackfootstudios.com eventually gets their game out. Gonna be like the old tom clancy style games.

I would say MW works just fine under this system. It's not TF2...

Saw this a couple weeks ago, dumbest shit i ever saw.
Every clan i know is no longer moving into MW2 meaning theyve killed the community as the MW is pretty dead as it is.
This game would've likely been awesome, but then they do this. Sad thing being they're probably still make just as much money as they did off of MW because supposedly this will stop the illegal copies, which MW had a lot of.

Nah, all that stuff about CoD4 having tons of pirated games is bullshit. About 1-2% of the total PC Community had pirated games, and even then, they had to deal with lag and bad hit reg on cracked servers. If you play on IW.net, everybody but the host will experience lag even with legal copies of the game. If the host has an extremely bad connection, then you will have a very bad game lag. The maximum amount of people per game I think will be a 9v9. On CoD4 Dedicated servers, I have personally seen it reach an upward of 32v32 not to mention all the mods available to the PC which is not accessible by console users.
The piracy percentage is probably much higher on the Xbox360 then the PC. It is very easy to mod your Xbox to allow you to play cracked games as well as play on the internet using your cracked copies. If you want to play on a legit server, which 99% of the servers are, then you needed to buy a game.
Another prime reason Infinity Ward is taking away dedicated servers is to make you pay for Download-able content. We are not quite sure how this will affect us but it may mean that if you want to patch your game, you have to pay $5-10 which is not a lot but after 4-5 patches, it starts adding up especially in these economic times. Infinity Ward's decision was based solely on profit. It is understandable that a company would do this but while doing so, Infinity Ward basically kicked their PC Community in the nuts and took away a unique gaming experience.

I was actually saving pennies to buy MW2, and that would be only original game i have except Guild Wars. But after this, it seems I wont acquire my copy of the game. I was playing UT 99 for years, then switched on MW, and was thinking to get on MW2. But if they are going to screw up dedicated server then GTFO ACTIVISION, since MP is almost all about my fav servers

/disagree dont want to wait. already pre ordered MW2 got the prestige edition. imo console>pc, but thats just because i've always played on consoles. GW is really the only pc game i play, and honestly if they make it like console online gaming it's not really that bad. i've enjoyed how the online gaming for CoD:3,4,and 5 have been..but again might just be because i'm used to that type of online gameplay :P

Believe me, it's that bad. The reason why people play on PC is for a completely different experience. Xbox360 has very limited competition, no mods, and no community. People buy games for the Xbox360 every few months because it gets boring but people play the same game for years (CoD2 and CoD1) because of the community and the ability to control your own gameplay. If Xbox360 gameplay wasn't so bad, then this decision by Infinity Ward wouldn't have exploded into such a huge outrage. I've played Xbox360, in the stock gametype, then yeah it's not bad. But when you want a community, complete control of what you play, and just massive 32-64 man games, then it's a complete disaster. Bad Company 2 is supposedly releasing dedicated servers for the Xbox360, I suggest you try it and see Ded Servers firsthand for yourself.

One of the reasons people prefer PC FPS' to console ones is because they have dedicated servers. There really is no reason to take them out, that's just retarded. I plan on buying it for 360 (lots of rl friends getting it), but I find this absolutely retarded.

Buy Call of Duty 4 on computer and find a server with the mod Promod. I assure you that it'll be very challenging. And once you get into scrimmaging other teams with your own team, it'll be a real challenge.

No...that's still called hardcore. Most people use a mod such as Pam4 to play that.
ProMod is basically regular BUT it removes ALL perks and all attachments except silencers. You have to play using your surroundings to outplay your opponents and work as a team with others. They also removed gun sway on scopes and all other guns.
The difference between Pam4 and proMod is that it gives you EVERYTHING you need for competitive play. No need to spend time in a pub leveling up. It removes things such as various perks to prevent you from getting gayed by clays or grenade launchers to spawn of some sort.
Enter the game, hit ~, then type this in console.
connect 8.9.5.193:28960
That'll take you to a promod server immediately
EDIT: Lol... Infinity Ward says their decision to remove dedicated servers from PC was due to high rates of piracy...which is only about 1-2%. On the other hand... Xbox360 already has torrents up for the game

No dedicated servers, 16 players per server max, PC price bumped up to $60 USD, controversial mission designed to get the media going...
Infinity Ward, Activision, lol.
